Who Is Involved?

This issue affects families and homegrown business because of huge companies that take away from natural resources, quality of products and prices. Also having factories based in third world countries and producing products with cheap Labor leave smaller and local business high and dry. Families might be running into problems like paying bills, giving their kids’ education, keeping up with demands from society's culture, Being able to work on their own terms and being exposed to situations and not having the experience to understand what should be done. Major companies like Coca-Cola, Wal-Mart, and Gap affect workers at factories in assembly lines and workers in department stores by not giving them proper training, equipment and more than eight hours.

Some countries that have a factory based in their cities or coummities are:
-          China
-          Vietnam
-          Indonesia
-          Mexico
-          India
-          Philippine
-          Ivory coast
-          New York
-          Nevada

Stores that have or had sweatshops, cheap labour, and unhealthy environment
(Physically & mentally) problems are:

-          Abercrombie and Fitch
-          Gymboree
-          Hanes
-          Ikea
-          Kohl’s
-          LL Bean
-          Pier 1 imports
-          Nike
-          Wal-Mart
-          Calvin Klein
-          Jones apparel
-          Liz Claiborne
-          Tommy Hilfiger
-          Gap
-          Disney

  1. Wow! I'm still very surprised that there are sweat shops so close to home (New York)! I am curious, though, are there sweat shops in Canada or even BC? And I am very surprised the companies such as LL Bean, Disney, and The Gap are willing to compromise their reputations by using sweat shop factories!

    1. Yes, there is a lot more sweat shops closer to home and New York is just one of them. Since operating sweatshops are illegal in Canada it is harder to find accurate statistics and locations. But Canada has had problems with Magazine companies using this method of production. And having a sweatshop-based company does not necessarily mean it is placed in a third world country. These companies can have people working for them locally in their on homes getting paid almost the same amount as regular wage in a sweatshop. Just because a label says “Made In China or Made In Mexico” does not Necessarily mean it's made there. It’s quite surprising with brands especially like Disney to compromise, since almost every child remembers growing up watching them or is growing up with them around. But I had found an article saying Disney had a factory produce products for them while the company uses child labor. 2. Hi Shariya,

Like Michelle I am fairly surprised at the number of companies that use sweat shops, especially Disney. What do you think are the stances of major companies that utilize sweat shops? Do you think this phenomenon will continue?

  3. Hey Shariya,
wow! after seeing the stores that violate workers rights, I'm shocked! Those are stores that people shop at everyday without knowing what really goes on behind the scenes to make the merchandise that they will buy. Thanks for including that information in this post, now I will definitely think twice about where I shop, in order to avoid contributing to this injustice.

    1. Hey Emily,
Thanks I'm glad you found my post interesting and I hope to keep you interested. and yeah anyone can make a difference but the fact is getting the companies to think about what their doing is inhuman.
