Workers ? what do they mean to me??

We say we are welcoming and equal towards everyone but that’s not the truth. The truth is that everyone is judgemental no matter how good they think they are and that’s something that comes naturally to us, at first when I looked at all the information. I couldn't believe that there is so much abuse towards workers that actually help us every day, whether it maybe through physical or mental abuse or just not giving them enough rights. But after doing all my research on different companies and programs that help with workers’ rights and actually understand the different environments workers work in. and now I wonder a lot more about how this process can be stopped completely or removed completely out of this cycle of abuse towards any one. One thing I still don’t understand completely is how people can actually treat other people differently just because their higher in “ranking”.

  1. Hi Shariya,
I too find it difficult to comprehend how an individual can treat others inhumanely. What do you think is the most realistic solution to this issue? Obviously, CEOs must prioritize money and the success of their company over the treatment of their workers. How can we change the thinking and priorities of large companies? And what do you do as a consumer to advocate for this cause?

    2. Thanks for the comment, and the most realistic solution i personally think is providing education for all workers. by education i mean giving them a voice, educating them about their rights, having them ask for regular maintenance in their factories, and locally educating consumers on what their products are and where they come from. i think these ideas will have any society moving in the right direction. For larger companies i think we have to show them they don't run people that work for them, or have any ruling of their employees. i think the major issue with huge factories is they care to much about profit, rather then taking their profits and investing into proper working environments and better trained employees (mangers & Supervisors).

  2. Hey Shariya,
I wonder if people were more educated about this issue, people would would stop promoting certain companies by buying their merchandise. Is there a way that large companies can be monitored by a higher power and therefore penalized if the worker's rights are not met? Also, I'm curious as to whether you've changed your shopping habits due to studying this issue. Are there any stores that you refuse to shop at now that you know how their products are made?

    1. Emily, i believe if people are educated they can stop it from happening. i know when i looked my information there was a lot of article, blogs, and news about coca-cola using child labor or Nike using sweatshops. And alot of people had stop purchasing theses products while starting petitions. i also believe there are higher powers that do now monitor however i am not entirely sure. Stores i probably pay more attention to are WalMart,Roots,Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein. i think iam starting to pay more attention to where the products are made and do i really need to go shop their. i have switched to superstore instead of walmart to some extent.

  3. Shariya,
I share the same concerns as you. But not to sound negative, but can you imagine a world where everyone had equal status and share equal rights? I sadly cannot. Maybe it's because our society is so accustomed to having a hierarchy system to make the gears of society spin. Put it into the worlds of a man, "who would work in Wal-mart if everyone share the same rights?"

  4. Eidson i agree with you but i do believe that society can get there it will just take alot more time. i also believe if alot more people are aware of this, it can change. if we have taken out slavery before why cant we do it again?
